We see that although most of the information that we shared works very well in theory, most often organizations find it challenging to implement the best green practices.

As any change in IT projects, procedures, systems follow a stringent change management process, it becomes difficult to practically attain the objectives that our posts mention.

Even with these challenges some organizations, both large and small have successfully implemented green practices by aligning this objective to their organization's business and operations objectives.

We first take the example of Google Inc. a leader in Green IT practices to show how companies can work towards going green with their IT investments.

At Google, they claim to minimize their environmental impact while providing their services. To provide Google products for a month, their servers use less energy per user than leaving a light on for 3 hours. If you add in their renewable energy and offsets, their footprint claim is zero. 

Google's data centers use only 50% of the energy of most other data centers. This has saved Google a billion dollars in energy costs to date, and cuts their impact on the environment. In fact, according to an independent study, Google uses very little of the world's electricity (less than 0.01%). Additionally, Google is the first major internet services company to gain external certification of the high environmental standards throughout their US data centers.

Since 2007, Google has recycled enough outdated servers to avoid buying over 90,000 new replacement machines. Before we buy new equipment and materials, we look for ways to reuse what we already have. When we can’t find a new use for our equipment, we completely erase any components that store data, and then resell them into the market—giving our equipment a second life.
